Why adding plants to your garden in fall is awesome

Amsonia hubrichtii with Fothergilla in the back

We want to remind you how wonderful a time Fall is to plant! Many associate spring to be the best time to plant but there are many advantages to turn your head towards shovel and watering can now.

1. You will be less distracted!

Do you know the feeling of going plant shopping in the spring when every shade of green is just exploding in your retina! It can be difficult to concentrate on your designated task area when it feels like all of the plants want to jump into your basket. It also may be tempting to purchase just what's blooming at that time without a thought of a multi-season garden effect. These plants have now gone dormant and they won't tempt you as much. Many perennials have very beautiful fall color display that you can only observe now. Take a deep breath and have a good time reading the plant signs and observing how full the pots are. You might be walking home with a plant that you can divide and get more plants for the same price compared to the same plant and pot in the spring.

2. Plants will love to have time to rest.

Let's face it. Southeast summers are pretty warm. Plants survive better if they can get more time to build bigger root systems. By planting in fall you will give your plants 4-5 months to build their root system and be ready for the blaze of summer heat. Let those babies rest! Trees and shrubs will especially love you more if you plant them now.

3. Gardening is therapy.

We're all probably exhausted from the year and just would prefer Turkey and Christmas dinner. Working in our gardens will often provide healthier benefits than indoor house activities. In 2017 published "Gardening is beneficial for health: A meta-analysis study found that “gardening increased life satisfaction, vigor, psychological wellbeing, and cognitive function. Further research on gardening found it improves our health and boosted our mood."
